One to Three Border

My design entry to Gardener’s World Live 2025 Beautiful Borders competition.

‘Cultivating Connections’

A space created to cultivate a connection with yourself, others and nature.

The border is designed to offer integrated seating for up to three people to pause and reflect - just 1-3 minutes of mindfulness in nature could make all the difference to your mindset. There is a seat for two on one side for shared moments, and a seat for one under the tree for quiet contemplation. A water bowl reflects the sky, and tactile and aromatic plants surround the seating to engage the senses.

The upright posts, while serving as nesting spaces for bees, subtly link the seating elements in a fragmented arrangement. This disjointed connection represents the ways we can feel separated from nature, others, and ourselves; but, just as bees cultivate life within these posts, we too can nurture and rebuild these lost connections.

The planting palette is based on an initial 1-3 of each species, one tree and a pack of seeds or two, twos of shrubs and threes of perennials and bulbs. Established plants can be divided into two or propagated cultivating the flora further. This advocates an idea of 'easy as 1, 2, 3', for visitors to use in their own garden sanctuary, cultivating their connection with nature at home.
